Overview
Lexis is designed with privacy at its core. We believe your vocabulary learning data is personal and should stay on your device. This policy explains exactly what data Lexis collects and how it handles your information.
Key principle: All vocabulary and settings data is stored locally on your device. Nothing is sent to our servers unless you explicitly use our cloud sync feature.
What Data We Collect
Lexis processes text you select to provide dictionary definitions. Here's how your data is handled:
| Data Type | Storage | Transmission |
|---|---|---|
| Vocabulary words Words you mark for learning |
Your device only | Never sent |
| Settings & preferences Interface language, API settings |
Your device only | Never sent |
| Selected text Words you look up |
Not stored | Sent to your AI provider |
| Vocabulary (with sync) Optional cloud backup |
Your account | Encrypted sync only |
How Your Data Is Used
AI Definitions
When you look up a word, the selected text is sent to your configured AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, or compatible API). This is necessary to generate definitions. We do not receive, store, or have access to this data.
Your AI API key is stored locally on your device and is only used to authenticate with your chosen provider.
Vocabulary Notebook
Words you mark are stored in Chrome's local storage (chrome.storage.local). This data:
- Stays on your device unless you enable cloud sync
- Is never shared with third parties
- Can be exported or deleted at any time
Optional Cloud Sync
If you enable the cloud sync feature:
- Your vocabulary is encrypted before transmission
- Data is synced only between your own devices
- You can disable sync and delete synced data anytime
Permissions We Request
- storage — To save your vocabulary and settings locally
- activeTab — To enable lookups only on the tab you're using
- alarms — To periodically sync your vocabulary (when sync is enabled)
- <all_urls> — To detect text selection on any webpage
Third-Party Services
Lexis uses third-party AI services to generate definitions:
- OpenAI (api.openai.com)
- Anthropic (api.anthropic.com)
- Or any OpenAI-compatible API you configure
When you use these services, their respective privacy policies apply. We recommend reviewing the privacy policies of your chosen AI provider.
Children's Privacy
Lexis is not specifically designed for children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children. If you believe a child has used our extension, please contact us.
Your Rights
You have full control over your data:
- Export — Download your vocabulary as a text file anytime
- Delete — Remove individual words or clear your entire vocabulary
- Disable — Uninstall the extension to remove all local data
- Control — Your API key and settings can be changed or removed in Settings
Changes to This Policy
We may update this privacy policy occasionally. Any changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of the extension after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
